This blog is not about me. Although I started it and I’m the one writing in it I’m not the one featured in it. This blog is about you out there. One person who I want to mention is Matt McClellan, www.McClellanWoodwork.com. He doesn’t know I have this blog, although I’ll send him the link after I post this. He also doesn’t know he makes cookies, although we have spoken about feeding our souls and following our dreams. You see Matt is another one that has decided to do what calls him: he makes coffins. Matt doesn’t just make coffins. He makes biodegradable coffins from Red Cedar. They are quite lovely and he is able to supplement his income as a cabinetmaker by baking Red Cedar cookies. I don’t know what he did before opening his small shop on the square in Pendleton South Carolina. I do believe he was a craftsman all his life. He has that special affinity for wood and building that one does not just fall into but is born to. He’s young and he’s learning. He makes guitars that are works of art. He’s learning to work a lathe and will be a heck of a bowl turner some day. And he makes coffins.
Did Matt stand on that pier, take a deep breath, and jump off? I don’t know and it doesn’t matter. To see the happiness in his eyes when he’s in his shop is all that matters. It’s the look we all want in our life.
As I said Matt doesn’t know about this blog—yet. But he will soon. However before he knows about this blog you will know about him. Go to his shop. Talk to him, but don’t take too much of his time unless he offers it. Buy something from the sales area next to his workroom. His boxes and other items are exquisite. And unless you really need a coffin you might wait a little before ordering one; just saying. Then go home and think about what you want in life or more importantly from life. Are you living up to your dream? Are you being, as the Army used to say in their advertisements, all that you can be? Others out there are leading the way. You just have to follow.
